Frans Englich recently posted an interview with Pete Gordon on portable usability labs and how they could help open source usability.

September 23, 2004: KDE 3.3 Usability Study and Review on userinstinct.com

UserInstinct.com recently published a usability study on KDE 3.3. The study describes the things KDE does well and addresses several issues we have been working on improving.

The user test includes comments from the test subjects as they use KDE which are very useful to the design and testing process. Feedback from the community like this helps the usability team focus on projects which will benefit the community the most.

September 3, 2004: News about aKademy, New Human Interface Guidelines

Over 230 KDE developers attended aKademy 2004. aKademy was especially exciting for usability because of the introduction of the Unix Accessibility Forum and the success of the Usability Forum with the participation of Relevantive AG and their usability lab setup. The conference also allowed participating developers organize goals for better usability guidelines.

The rewriting of the KDE Accessiblity Guidelines, Community Identity Guidelines and Human Interface Guidelines is now underway. Discussion of the HIG as well as the other guidelines is available through the kde-guidelines mailing list.

February 27, 2003: usability.kde.org ported to new design

Still to do:

  • Design a custom title graphic
  • Activate our search function again in the new templates
  • Most importantly: Add in all of the Usability Report related functionality and the already submitted Usability Reports.

February 27, 2003: Mosfet active on kde-usability

Well known Linux advocate and KDE contributor Mosfet has joined a KDE mailing list for the first time in a year and luckily for us it was kde-usability. He is currently planning on making the theme manager useful again, so you can do something like install Keramik or his own Liquid theme without having to individually select the colour settings, window decoration and style in KControl.

September 17, 2002: A paper on KDE and Usability

Jason Bainbridge has submitted an abstract of a paper on KDE and Usability that hopefully will be presented at Linux.conf.au 2003 in Perth, Australia next January. The abstract of the paper that was prepared with asistance from A. Seigo is available here.

Update: Unfortunately Jason wasn't able to present but his paper will soon be published and made available.

September 15, 2002: A taste of things to come

There are many efforts curently underway in regards to improving Usability within KDE and the following is a small sample of these.
  • KControl Re-organisation - After heavy discussion and numerous disagreements a new an improved structure is in the process of being implemented and will be included in the release of KDE 3.1.
  • A new way to track proposed changes to the KDE Style Guide.
  • A simplified To-Do list, which will double as a "How can I help?" section list so anyone even complete beginners to KDE will be able to easily find a task they can assist with.

September 15, 2002: A new host and a renewed effort

Recently we have had problems with the up time of the website but we have migrated across to the main master.kde.org server so in the future we should have much better stability. To coincide with this move there is a lot of effort currently underway to improve the functionality of the site and make it a valuable resource for Usability within KDE.
